Words and meaning
The meaning of the prophet’s name Ādam
According to the authentic narration from Ibn ʿAbbās (رضي الله عنه) the Prophet Ādam عليه السلام was given this name because he was created from the earth's crust/soil.
In Arabic it is أَدِيمٌ "soil/crust".
أَديمُ الأرضِ earth crust/ soil
أديمُ السماءِ
"crust"/"face" of the sky (the part visible to the eye)
The word آدَمُ was originally أأْدَمُ, just like أَكْبَرُ
Then أَأْ turned into آ
Interestingly, that another meaning of the word آدَمُ is dark-skinned .
رجلٌ آدمُ- dark-skinned man
آدَمُ
in the sense of male name - it is mamnūʿ min ṣarf-
as it's non arab male name
آدمُ
in the sense of "dark-skinned" it is mamnūʿ min ṣarf as it's describing word on the pattern of أَفْعَلُ
Does it mean that Prophet Ādam was dark-skinned?
Even though it might be tempting to draw conclusion with the connection to darkness of the soil and another linguistic meaning of آدم, but there are no authentic narrations about it.
And Allāh سبحانه وتعالى knows best.
