The Qurʾān, the muṣḥaf and translated meanings

The difference between the Qurʾān (القرآن), Muṣḥaf (مصحف) and translation of the meanings of the Qurʾān

(based on explanation by Dr V. ʿAbd al‑Raḥīm (رَحِمَهُ اللهُ) )

القرآن - word of Allāh, His Book
It's uncreated. We can recite it, ponder upon its meanings.

المصحف - printed copy of
(only in Arabic) Al-Qurʾān

We can sell it, buy it. It can be small, big, any colour. We can put it on the shelf.

So, we cannot say:
I bought the Qurʾān. I put the Qurʾān on the shelf.

Rather we say: I bought Muṣḥaf, I put Muṣḥaf on the shelf.

Muṣḥaf - when the text is only in Arabic.

When there is a translation, then we say:
Translation of the meanings of the Qurʾān.

We cannot say:
The translation of the Qurʾān, as the Qurʾān cannot be translated. It is only in Arabic.

Rather we say about translation: translation/interpretation of the meanings of the Qurʾān as they are understood by the translator.
