When One Letter Carries Meaning — Reflections on Sūrat al-Kahf
Sometimes in Arabic, two forms of a word share the same basic meaning, yet one contains an additional letter. This difference in structure may carry an additional shade of meaning appropriate to the context.
Shaykh Ibn ʿUthaymīn (رَحِمَهُ اللهُ) expressed this principle as:
زِيَادَةُ الْمَبْنَى تَدُلُّ عَلَى زِيَادَةِ الْمَعْنَى
“ An increase in the word’s structure indicates an increase in its meaning .”
This occurs in Sūrat al-Kahf, where two verbs
اسْطَاعَ and اسْتَطَاعَ
are used with remarkable precision.
Both forms mean to be able, but اسْطَاعَ is a shortened and lighter form of اسْتَطَاعَ.
When al-Khiḍr عليه السلام was about to explain his actions to Mūsā عليه السلام, he said:
﴿سَأُنَبِّئُكَ بِتَأْوِيلِ مَا لَمْ تَسْتَطِعْ عَلَيْهِ صَبْرًا﴾
“ I shall inform you of the interpretation of that over which you could not remain patient .”
[Sūrat al-Kahf: 78]
At this point, Mūsā عليه السلام still did not know the wisdom behind what had happened. The matter remained difficult for him to understand and patiently bear, so the fuller form was used:
تَسْتَطِعْ
After al-Khiḍr had explained everything and the matter had become clear, he concluded:
﴿ذَٰلِكَ تَأْوِيلُ مَا لَمْ تَسْطِعْ عَلَيْهِ صَبْرًا﴾
“ That is the interpretation of that over which you could not remain patient .”
[Sūrat al-Kahf: 82]
Now that the confusion had been removed and the matter had become lighter, the shortened form was used:
تَسْطِعْ
The same precision appears in the description of the barrier built by Dhū al-Qarnayn:
﴿فَمَا اسْطَاعُوا أَنْ يَظْهَرُوهُ وَمَا اسْتَطَاعُوا لَهُ نَقْبًا﴾
“ They were unable to climb over it, nor were they able to pierce it .”
[Sūrat al-Kahf: 97]
Climbing over the barrier was easier than piercing through its strong structure. Therefore, the lighter form was used for climbing:
اسْطَاعُوا
While the fuller form was used for the more difficult task of piercing it:
اسْتَطَاعُوا
Ibn Kathīr (رَحِمَهُ اللهُ) said:
فَقَابَلَ الْأَثْقَلَ بِالْأَثْقَلِ، وَالْأَخَفَّ بِالْأَخَفِّ
“ He matched the heavier with the heavier, and the lighter with the lighter .”
The basic meaning of both forms is the same, but their precise placement reveals another aspect of the extraordinary eloquence and accuracy of the Qurʾān.
